of Vitreous Materials
Vitreous
phosphates containing zinc chloride ZnCl2 or lead chloride PbCl2
which show some potential in optical communications, can be prepared by
quenching melts technique. At present the physical characteristics of these
vitreous are still not very well-understood. The main objective of this
research is to prepare and to characterize the ultrasonic properties of
vitreous laser phosphate.
The elastic
properties of these vitreous materials are determined by measuring the
ultrasonic velocity and attenuation of longitudinal and shear waves (from
5 MHz to 25 MHz frequency) propagating through the samples using a pulse-echo
overlap technique. The above measurements are investigated at high and
low temperature regimes. The complete ultrasonics setup i.e pulse echo
overlapped system and ultrasonics data acquisition system (MBS 8000) and
high and low temperature dewar system are currently available at the Ultrasonics
Research Laboratory.
